High-Flow Nasal Cannula Primer: How It Works and Mobility Decision-Making
This online course will provide a clinically focused foundation to high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygen therapy. It will emphasize clinical reasoning using case-based activities focused on mobilizing people receiving HFNC in different health care settings.
Upon successful completion of the online course, there is an additional in-person session available to obtain hands-on experience with HFNC and engage in case-based learning and interprofessioal collaboration.
Four-week online course available from November 16, 2026 to December 14, 2026.

Practising physiotherapists, including new graduates and interdisciplinary clinicians
Course Overview
Registrants will have access to the University of Toronto’s online learning platform for 4 weeks for the asynchronous online course to provide flexibility for course completion.
After completion of the online course there is an opportunity to register for an additional in-person 3-hour session at the University of Toronto.
Registrants will learn to:
identify the purpose, indications and mechanisms of HFNC and explain how this differs from conventional oxygen therapy.
apply an oxygen decision-making framework to determine the clinical indicators of mobility readiness and guide the set-up of an appropriate oxygen interface for mobilization.
describe emerging clinical uses of HFNC and practical considerations related to device portability and mobility.
