Sharon Gabison receives award from Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada

The Physiotherapy Foundation of Canada (PFC) has announced the winners of its 2023 Awards Program.

This year, three physiotherapists from the department of physical therapy have received awards.

Sharon Gabison has received the Alun Morgan Memorial Research Grant in Orthopaedic Physiotherapy for her research, “Leveraging Machine Learning to Optimize Electrical Stimulation in the Non-Responsive Patient: A Pilot Study.” This award was established in 1989 in honour of Alun Morgan, a pioneer of manual therapy in Canada. The grant provides support for physiotherapy research projects related to the management of musculoskeletal problems in Canada.

Alum Mujeeb-Rehman Duranai (Class of ‘16) is this year’s recipient of the Constance Beattie Memorial Fund Bursary Program. The Constance Beattie Memorial Fund was established by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association in 1949 to honour the fund’s namesake, who died in a plane crash at the age of 24 while serving as a dedicated physiotherapist in Canada’s north. Bursaries help fund continuing education courses that are relevant to their career goals.

Renato Barbosa dos Santos, a Ph.D. student in the Rehabilitation Sciences Institute, has received the Ann Collins Whitmore Memorial Scholarship. Renato is conducting research on “Task-Oriented Exercise Programs Delivered Virtually for People with Balance and Mobility Limitations: A Scoping Review Incorporating an Equity-Lens to Inform the Development of Strategies to Optimize Participation of Underrepresented Groups” under the supervision of Nancy Salbach. This award was established in honour of Ann Collins Whitmore, a dedicated physiotherapist who served her patients from the beginning of her career in the Canadian Military during the Second World War through to the end of her career when she continued to practice though legally blind. This scholarship is awarded to a post-graduate student to fund a pilot or feasibility project.

Congratulations to all recipients on your awards!
