Chavon Niles has been awarded a Temerty Faculty of Medicine Pre-partnership Grant for a pilot study examining the unique barriers and facilitators navigating rehabilitation services in Guyana, a culturally and racially diverse country.
According to the World Health Organization, there are approximately 2.4 billion people living with health conditions that may benefit from rehabilitation, with the majority of these people living in countries in the global South.
Currently, there is no country-wide data on rehabilitation practices in Guyana, but there is great interest in achieving this and building on the recent accelerated growth of rehabilitation providers across Guyana. As there are more resources being invested into rehabilitation services, this research can support in guiding this growth.
Working in partnership with The Breadfruit Collective and supported by the Ministry of Health in Guyana, this pilot study offers an opportunity to collaborate and learn across continents, share rehabilitation practices and services from Canada, and learn from those in Guyana.
The Pre-partnership Grant is designed to help address the need to build stronger relationships between academics and individuals at external organizations, develop the competencies for collaboration among stakeholders and establish a foundation for investment-intensive research collaborations. This project is funded from November 2023 to April 2024.
