Prof. Chavon Niles has received a Connaught New Researcher Award for her project, Challenging dominant discourses of care work: understanding the experiences of disabled women who are both caregivers and care receivers navigating health and rehabilitation services in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).
As women tend to do the majority of care work, and the experiences of people who are both caregivers and care receivers are rarely discussed, this much needed work will help to better support disabled women who exist at this intersection.
Given the Government of Canada’s commitment to supporting research rooted in understanding the experiences of caregivers, this is an opportune time to pursue this important research study, which is essential for addressing health disparities, informing policy and improving support for caregivers.
Niles will be working with the Centre for Independent Living in Toronto (CILT) and Realize Canada who will support with recruiting participants, data analysis and dissemination of findings.
The Connaught Fund is the largest internal university research funding program in Canada. The New Researcher Award helps early-career faculty members establish their research programs and increase competitiveness for external funding. Approximately 50 awards are funded annually.
